Schengen tourist visa guide

Indonesian passport holders

Early guide — source review in progress

A sample preparation guide for a Schengen short-stay tourist visa application from Indonesia, using Germany as the anchor member state. Requirements depend on the specific Schengen member state and embassy handling the application — always verify the current checklist with them directly.

This guide is useful for orientation, but it has not been promoted to a finalized route. Please compare every item with the current source before relying on it.

Common preparation themes

Passport (bio page)

usually required

The passport must be signed, issued within the previous 10 years, contain at least two blank visa pages, and remain valid for at least three months after the requested visa period.

Helpful direction: If you're not an Indonesian resident (e.g. holding a KITAS or KITAP), also verify any residence-permit validity requirements that apply.

Schengen visa application form

usually required

Often the standard form used across Schengen visa application centers.

Helpful direction: Double-check the destination country matches your main port of entry or longest stay.

ID photo

usually required

Often requested with specific Schengen photo specifications.

Helpful direction: Recent passport-style photos on a plain light background are commonly accepted.

Travel medical insurance

usually required

Must be valid for the entire requested period and across all Schengen member states, with minimum coverage of €30,000 including evacuation and repatriation.

Helpful direction: Look for policies that explicitly state Schengen-compliant minimum coverage and dates matching your trip.

Round-trip flight itinerary

usually required

Commonly requested to show your planned entry and exit dates.

Helpful direction: A reservation is often enough — avoid purchasing non-refundable tickets before your visa is decided.

Accommodation proof

usually required

An existing accommodation reservation showing the property name, complete address, city, postal code, contact details, and booking reference.

Helpful direction: Make sure the reservation shows the property name, address, and a booking reference — not just a confirmation email subject line.

Financial evidence

usually required

Personal bank or savings statements covering at least the previous three months. When the trip is sponsored, this includes the sponsor's financial statements, a written sponsorship declaration, and proof of the relationship between you and the sponsor. There is no single official fixed daily-funds amount for this route — treat any such figure you see elsewhere as unconfirmed.

Helpful direction: A steady balance history is often easier to review than one large recent deposit.

Employment letter

usually required

Often used to show your employment status and employer-confirmed leave for the trip. Requested details commonly include your name, passport number, position, employment start date, employer-confirmed leave period, net salary, and the employer's address and telephone number.

Helpful direction: Ask HR to include your passport number and their office phone number — both are commonly checked.

Cover letter

usually required

Germany's Jakarta checklist requests an original cover letter explaining the purpose of travel and the complete itinerary.

Helpful direction: Mention your job, your return date, and the reason for the trip in a few short paragraphs.

Contact consent form

usually required

Germany's Jakarta application process requests a signed contact consent form alongside the application form.

Helpful direction: This is usually provided as part of the application packet — check with the VFS center if you don't have it.

Kartu Keluarga (family card)

usually required

A current Kartu Keluarga is commonly requested as part of Indonesian applicants' civil-status evidence.

Helpful direction: Make sure the copy is current and legible.

Self-employed or freelance evidence

route dependent

Self-employed and freelance applicants are commonly asked for business/tax records or a portfolio and payment evidence in place of an employer letter.

Helpful direction: Include whatever combination of business registration, tax, and payment records best shows steady income.

Sponsor and minor-applicant documents

route dependent

If the trip is sponsored, embassies commonly request the sponsor's financial documents, a written declaration, and proof of your relationship. Minor applicants commonly need parental consent and custody documents where relevant.

Helpful direction: Confirm the exact sponsor-declaration or consent format Germany's Jakarta process currently expects.

Travel history and certified translations

optional support

Previous Schengen or national visas can support your application, and any document not in an accepted language commonly needs a certified translation.

Helpful direction: Not everyone needs this — skip it if it doesn't apply to you.
